Dion Renee and D-LO are the leaders, owners, and co-founders of SunCenter, a creative collective dedicated to the elevation of music, art, and self-expression. Together, they operate as the duo known as “The Core,” using hip-hop and social media as platforms to express their perspectives on politics, culture, and society through thought-provoking lyricism, bold commentary, and explicit comedy. Their passion for artistic authenticity is rooted in a shared appreciation for quality music, creative freedom, and a commitment to challenging forces they believe stand against art and humanity.
Their journey began in 2018 when Dion relocated to Grand Rapids after living in Detroit and various parts of eastern Michigan. The two became friends in high school, initially challenging one another through off-the-dome freestyle battles against fellow aspiring rappers, both their age and older. Having written music independently since childhood, their mutual respect for lyricism and artistic expression eventually developed into a creative partnership. Years later, Dion met Teyland Avery, founder and CEO of 616 Records, at a family gathering, where they discovered they were cousins. This unexpected family connection opened the door to a new opportunity for Dion and D-LO, who subsequently joined 616 Records as interns to gain firsthand experience and learn the ins and outs of the music industry. Through their internships, they aim to expand their knowledge of artist development, music business operations, marketing, and creative entrepreneurship while continuing to build SunCenter and establish their own identities within the industry.
